spring reset: why March is the perfect time to start fresh

Every year we’re told that January is the time to reinvent our lives with new goals, new routines and new habits. But if you’ve ever felt that January is a difficult time to feel motivated, you’re not alone.
While the brand-new sparkle of the new year can be a powerful catalyst for some, it isn’t always the time when motivation feels most natural or forthcoming.
With the magic of Christmas festivities long gone, we're stuck in survival mode getting through the cold and miserable depths of winter.
It's no wonder getting motivated can be a struggle - while we may be clear on what we'd like to achieve, it can be extremely difficult to gain any significant momentum.

March, however, is when the real magic begins!
With signs that spring on its way, the days grow longer, the weather becomes brighter, and with nature bursting into full colour, we naturally feel a renewed sense of positive energy and possibility. Finally coming out of hibernation mode, it feels like the year is truly beginning.
Motivational quote 'spring is the time of plans & projects' by Leo Tolstoy with floral background.
This is why spring is the perfect time for a life reset - taking a moment to pause, reflect, and set fresh intentions for the months ahead. With the motivation that naturally comes at this time of year, your goals will seem more realistic and your new habits actually achievable.

Here’s how to use the season of renewal to reset your goals, refresh your routines, and create a plan that actually feels exciting.

Step 1: reflect on the first part of the year

Before you make new plans, take a moment to reflect (this will help you move forward intentionally, rather than simply continuing on autopilot). Ask yourself a few simple questions:

• What has gone well so far this year?
• Which goals still feel meaningful?
• What no longer fits your life or priorities?
• What would you love to focus on moving forward?

Step 2: refresh your goals

Spring is a wonderful time to adjust your goals. Maybe you set ambitious plans in January that now feel unrealistic. Or maybe new ideas have emerged over the past few months.
Give yourself permission to refine your direction. A helpful approach is choosing three priorities. These might be:

• A personal goal (health, learning, hobbies)
• A professional goal (projects, growth, organisation)
• A lifestyle goal (home, routines, relationships)

Step 3: declutter your schedule

Just like we spring clean our homes, it’s helpful to spring clean our calendars.
Take a look at your weekly schedule and ask:

• Are there commitments that no longer feel necessary?
• Is your week overloaded?
• Where could you create more breathing room?

When you remove what isn’t serving you, you create space for what matters most. Your planner can become a powerful tool here, helping to design a week that feels balanced rather than overwhelming.

Step 4: start fresh habits

Spring is an ideal time to begin new habits because motivation often feels more natural.
Instead of trying to change everything at once, choose one or two small routines to focus on. Examples might include:

• A daily walk in the morning light
• 10 minutes of journaling or planning each day
• A weekly reset for your home or schedule
• A consistent bedtime routine

Tracking these habits in your planner can help build momentum and create a visual reminder of your progress.

Step 5: plan something to look forward to

One of the most motivating parts of planning is having joyful things ahead to look forward to. It's too easy to think to ourselves we'll do x,y,z when we're less busy, and so they never happen. If we don't plan them into our schedule, they'll never take any priority - get them booked in!

• Day trips and outdoor activities
• Creative projects
• Personal milestones
• Time with friends and family

Ready to start your own spring reset?

If the year hasn’t unfolded the way you expected so far, that’s okay.
Spring offers a beautiful reminder that new beginnings aren’t limited to January. There's always another opportunity to start afresh, review your goals, and create a plan to bring clearer focus.
So take a quiet moment and ask yourself: What steps can I take to start my spring reset?
